For several days, we have viewed the courtroom drama 12 Angry Men. In the film, 11 jurors are convinced that the defendant is guilty; one man is convinced of his innocence. While the evidence appears overwhelmingly against the accused teenager, this one man is able to use the same evidence to steer the others to his way of thinking.
I would like two separate posts.
In the first:
Did this film help you to view the essay/argument in a different way? How? What did you learn in particular that you will bring to the writing process?
In the second post:
I would love to know what you thought of the film. Give me YOUR OPINION (yikes).

ReplyDeleteThis film did help me view my essay in a different way. It showed me that I need to make my point arguable but also always have evidence and reasons to back up my point of view, just like the once man sure of the boy's innocence. I know now how important it is to stay on the one thought and opinion that you originally stated in your argument, and in this case, essay. You can not sway back and forth between opinions and two different points of view. (E.x. "Well on the other hand...")
ReplyDeleteI thought the film was very good. I enjoyed it and how the one man was able to change everyone's mind into believing the boy was not guilty. The evidnence he proposed was very scientific and made a lot of sense, and the evidence that was originally given seemed less convincing. I really enjoy mysteries like this so that also was another reason why I liked it.
ReplyDeleteThis film definately supported my thsis statement. One of the many points of the movie was that you can not judge someone just by their backround which definately ties in to my thesis statement, since the 18 year old is from the slums. It also showed me that I need more evidence to back up the thesis statement and the topic sentences. That is how the main character in this movie made everyone vote not guilty. i also need to make some assumptions that are very persuasive to convince people to agree with my thesis.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the movie even though this is the second time I have seen it. It was good to see it again to refresh my memory. I really like how the main character would think of things that no one else would ever think of. For example, how he talked about the man who wasn't able to hear the boy kill his father if the train was goin by. I don't understand why I like it so much because I don't like court movies.
ReplyDeleteAfter seeing this movie, I viewed my essay in a very different way. The comparison of an essay to a courtcase is anwsome! I will definitly think about this while writing my essay because now I won't be so timid in picking a topic that is way out there, or that no one else is doing, because I know that if I present my argument in a certain way, I can pursuade my audience to feel the same way, and not think I'm crazy!
ReplyDeleteI personally enjoyed this movie. being absent a day, I was confused as to what was going on. But then I started understanding more about the case and really getting into their arguments for why he was innocent. Some people might get bored with a bunch of old guys, but I actually liked having a bunch of men as opposed to a bunch of women. It was interesting to see that the jury actually does consider the case very thoroughly when deciding who's guilty and who's innocent in a case.
ReplyDeleteThis film really did help me understand essay writing. It really made me think and learn to take apart the different parts of an essay, and analyze your "evidence" or quotes. This film really did make me realize that there are many different steps that are required to write a good essay. I also learned that how you present your evidence is important because you want your argument to be strong.
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed watching the film because I find court scences interesting and I love hearing both sides of the story. I like to decide myself, which side I'm on in the case. The evidence that was presented was very detailed, and I liked watching the jury try to re-enact the crime scene.

ReplyDeleteThis film did help me understand essay writing better. It made me realize how important evidence is. I also learned how important it is to present your evidence in a good manner, since you want your argument to be strong and change peoples' opinions
ReplyDeleteHonestly, I did not like the movie too much. I am not too interested in court dramas. The movie got better towards the end, but it was painfully slow in the beginning. What I did like, though, is when the man was talking about the woman having glasses. That was really interesting.
ReplyDeleteThe movie "12 Angry Men" has helped me realize how any evidence can be turned around to prove one's point of view, or at least plant a seed of doubt in one's mind that shatters a firmly implemented opinion. It has also made me realize that evidence looked on the surface that proves one point, may not be true or realistic if carefully analyzed. Essays must twist or present evidence that proves the writer's point to an extent that is hard to argue with or makes it so the opposing argument is contradicted.
ReplyDeleteI really liked the movie, because court drama is something I like. I often watch Judge Judy or People's Court because I like hearing about these legal cases, and Judge Judy always gives the case a little humor now and then. What was especially interesting is, I don't normally watch criminal cases. I watch crazy people sue others for money they may or may not deserve. The case was interesting to watch as it showed what the jury did. I have only seen what goes on in the court, not the jury's debates.
ReplyDeleteThis film did help me view my essay in a different way. By watching this film, I futher understood how an essay was like a court case. You need to have evidence to back up your writing, or else, it is not effective. Now in my essays, I will try to incorperate what the movie taught me into my work.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed watching the film "12 Angry Men". It was more interestiing than I though it would be. I enjoyed the part where Henry Fonda was seeing how long it would take the old man to get to his door like he said he did.
ReplyDeleteThis film actually did help me view the essay in a different way. I had never thought of an essay as a court case. Thinking of an essay as a court case makes the essay less intimidating to me and a bit less of a hassle. I like proving that I’m right, so through the essay I can present information to back me up. I learned in particular that during an essay, I need to explain my evidence more thoroughly because someone might see it as a contradictory statement when the evidence can be used to prove my point. In the movie, the men see the evidence in their own way and this makes them decide whether the boy is guilty or not.
ReplyDeleteI thought this film was interesting. I liked seeing what the main character would come up with next and how everyone would react. It was slow at the beginning, but it definitely got better. Overall, I enjoyed the movie and it was a good way to connect writing an essay to a memorable subject.
ReplyDeleteThe film deffinitley helped me veiw the argument in a different way. I was brought to the the conclusion that boy was guilty; just by looking at the expression on his face. But I had then realzed that nothing can ever be so easy as to come up with a result from a murder trial. I learned that one must be convincing when talking about his or her statement at the beginnig of the essay; most important part is being universal.
ReplyDeleteI thought the film was really great! It made me think about making my career as an atourney or a lawyer. I love suspensful movies, including ones that deal with life situations such as the one in 12 Angry Men. My facorite part was when the architect oulled out a knife that was exactly the sam as the one the boy on trial had, and that he had bought it at a pawn shop for six dollars (if that is correct?)
ReplyDeleteThe film did help me view my argument in a different way. In the beginning I expected the boy to be guilty because his face looked worried and scared. It was as if he knew he did something wrong, but after hearing all of the evdience and clues that the juror put together, I came to the conclusion that the 18 year old was not guilty. I learned that I have to have my evidence and give good reason the the evidence I am giving. I have to explain it well for the reader to understand it.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the film! I am the kind of person who likes the crime and debate kind of movies or tv shows because then I can have my own opinion on them and see if I was right or wrong. This film definitly intrigued me tremendously. It was not only an outstanding film, but it taught me about how to make my argument in my essay.
ReplyDeleteThis film helped me view my essay/argument in a difrent way because the movie showed that the one man which was the only believer at first gave evidence and I learned that I need evidence which in an essay is details and quotes. It also made me realize how little detailes matter and how one's point of view matters also.
ReplyDeleteAt first I though aw man this film is going to be those old films which are boring. Then after the argument and them swithching to not guily it actually became interesting and I started paying attention. I loved when that one man believed how that boy was innocent and kept fighting with evidence until the boy was voted not guilty.
ReplyDeleteI deffinitely think that veiwing an essay as a court case is helpfull. One thing that I learned from watching this particular movie was that while evidence may apear to point to a certain conclustion, if you examine it more thoroughly, it may point to an all together different conclusion. Sometimes even the opposite of what it apeared to originaly mean
ReplyDeletePersonally I really liked the film. I liked it because I think debates are usually interesting, and I like how one man started off against all the others but then brought them over to his side of thinking. I also liked it how the each the one man examined each peice of evidence and showed that it did not necessarily mean the boy was guilty
ReplyDeleteThis film actually did help me view the essay/argument in a different way. Whenever I would write an essay I never even thought that an essay could be like a court case. I always thought that it was just a regular essay. When I realized that an essay was like a court case I though that writing essays could be easier. I that the evidence in a court case could be used in an essay as quotes to back up and support my thesis throughout the essay. This film helped me in a way that I can now write better essays.
ReplyDeleteI thought that the film 12 Angry Men was actually a very good movie. I have never really liked the movies that they show us in school but I really enjoyed this one. I liked how in the beginning of the movie everyone thought that the 18 year old boy was guilty except for one man and in the end he was able to change everyone's mind and show that the boy was not guilty because of good evidence. The only thing that I didn't like was that the movie was so good that I got distracted from doing my notes ans watching the movie that I didn't get taht much on my notes.
ReplyDelete12 Angry Men showed me a different perspective in the essay because it gave an excellent example of how to argue in an essay to persuade the reader. In my next essay, I will remember to add precise detailed evidence into my supporting paragraphs. I will continue to add enough details until my point gets across.
ReplyDeleteThe movie 12 Angry Men was a good movie to me because it was enriched with uprising details. Even though it was a black-and-white movie, the actors made it seem like an old-aged reality jury show. This is all I have to really say about this movie: excellent. :D
ReplyDeleteThe film did not help me view the essay differently than before I watched it. I understood about an essay being an argument and how the facts and quotes relate. For me, although I understand the concepts, there is still a gray area in my mind on exactly how to write. The essay process is a lot harder to think about logically than a court case.
ReplyDelete12 Angry Men was an intriguing film. The beginning was a bit dragged out and sometimes I felt like the men in the film that just wanted it to be over. Once the real arguments and good points started to be made I became quit found of it. I like to watch people argue if the argument is good, meaning both sides have some way of making you think things through again.
