Blog Assignment One

You have just embarked on a brand new journey; the high school experience. Believe me, you will survive, if not excel. Talk to me about your experience so far. What has four days of high school revealed to you about this environment? I would like to hear about your feelings, your expectations, your hopes, your apprehensions. Would do you like about it; what could you do without (besides your English teacher)? Please be as frank as possible and, as always, remember our forum.

  2. My first four days of high school have gone pretty well. The enviroment is much different than the middle school. Here, we have lockers, better electives, better teachers, and much more freedom. What I like about high school is that the teachers are much cooler and we can wear open toed shoes. What I don't like about the high school is that in 9th and 10th grade, you can't leave early if you waive PE. In middle school, I got to leave after 5th period every day, but Mr. Garza won't let you in high school, instead you have to take another elective, that is really dissapointing to me.

  3. The first few days of high school have pretty much gone the way I expected. My biggest worry was and still is that getting good grades would be a lot harder than in middle school and I would not have time for anything else. I don't know whether this is true yet, because I have not had any tests yet. Also teachers have not started assigning as much homework as they normally would, and I havn't been assigned any projects yet.
On another topic. I am really excited for surf team to start. I am unhappy though, because it has not yet been decided who will coach the team. Untill they can find a coach, we have PE first period, which I don't really like.

  4. Amy, I agree with what you said about getting to leave early if you dont have PE. I also think that we should be able to leave durring lunch if we want to. Kids in other highschools can, so why can't we?

  5. My first four days have been relatively easy. I haven't had to stay up late doing homework yet, but I doubt it will last. The atmosphere is definitely different than middle school and we have more freedoms such as being allowed to use cell phones during snack and lunch and having a less strict dress code. My expectations are to learn as much as possible and then retain it to be prepared for more difficult tests and courses in following years. I hope to enjoy this year instead of wanting it to be summer already. I don't really have any apprehensions other than when I go home from school, being worried that I forgot a text book or notebook that I need. I like having a locker to put my school supplies in, but I extremely dislike trying to get to my locker at snack because the halls are packed with people and I don't like bringing my books back and forth since I walk to school. Other than those few disappointments, I believe this is going to be a great year!

P.S. Ms. Gerber, you made a spelling error on the prompt. "Would do you like about it" should say "What do you like about it" :)

  6. Tyler, I agree with you about being worried that getting good grades would be a lot harder than in middle school. I've heard that from people too, but I have also heard that freshman year is the easiest of the four. If this is true, then we can ease into all that hard work ahead of us.

  7. Amy, I agree with you that you should be able to leave if you don't have PE, but I think two electives would be fun. Then you get to get your fine art out of the way. I also thought that the teachers at the middle school were awesome. I loved all of my classes last year because of the teachers, but, yes, the teachers here are cool too.

  8. Hi everyone, I don't know if this is showing my name or not but this is Sam and the main thing I was worried about was meeting new friends at El Segundo since I didn't go to El Segundo Middle School. But the first four days have been pretty awesome. I'm in band and thats always fun but the homework load from biology is terrible. I hope to get used to my classes and be submerged in my education. I could do without all the classes I don't like (Biology, Spanish, and Carrer explorations, I meen what the heck is that), but other than that, High School is fine.

  9. Corrina, I totally agree with you I cant even get to my locker half the time it's like a mob down their. I have to wait in line to get to my locker because right where my locker is about 1,000,000 other people hav locker. It's so frustrating.

  10. Amy, that is an awesome rule at El Segundo Middle School about the periods. At my middle school, Palms Middle School, we were forced to take P.E every year. I am just excited that in Junior and Senior year I won't have to take P.E. I can't wait!

  11. My experience in four days of high school has opened my mind towards greater opportunities that will help me excel in my high school years. The things I look forward to doing most would be to sign up for community service when the time is right for me. I can't really say that I'm disappointed with anything about school (except that my Spanish teacher speaks really fast, and I must say, as a Hispanic boy like myself, tends to confuse me most of the time) As for everything else, I always take challenges positive. My only apprehension is that my locker won't jam shut one day, since it is a bit hard to open, and close! I just hope to get plenty of knowledge out of this year!

  12. Corrina, I totaly agree with you about how staying up late on work will come to us later on. Im guessing that in the future every other week in school is a heads up for just some other test. I hope it really doesn't happen to any of us soon.

  13. Corrina, I agree with you about having to bring the textbooks back and forth to school every day. The biology and geometry textbooks are huge! So far the only homework I have had that required the textbeook was in biology, but I doubt it will stay that way much longer.

  14. Samuel, i feel for you when you talk about making friends. It can be difficult sometimes, but one great little conversation can lead to another and another. P.S. It's showin your name.

  15. Wesley: My first four days of school. I say yay. My experience so far is in the middle of good and bad. I have no complaints or praises to give out so far. The classes have been relatively easy so far.I am happy, however to finally have lockers. I am not sure if I want to skip P.E. later on in high school, but I'll find out when I get there.

  16. Corrina, I agree that the dress code is much less strict and I like it alot better!

  17. When I first entered through those doors into the territory of the high school world, i didn't know what to exactly expect. It seemed that everything was going to be a giant adventure that would expand over four years.. let alone four days. The one thing that i noticed in all classes were that they were not all separated by individual class grade levels [like middle school and elementary school], but were mixed with students from all over the school. I thought that i wasn't going to recognize anyone, and be supposedly "lonely", when i realized how many familiar faces were walking through the halls of the school, and how many of my friends felt the same way. Being a freshman, I thought that we were all going to be pushed around by all of the juniors and seniors that seem two feet taller than all of us, but really, this is a safe environment that i have come to appreciate. I expect that throughout my four year adventure to make new friends, become close enough to my teachers to the point where i would WANT to come back and visit them, and be able to give useful advice that I have picked up personally, to incoming freshman for the next years to come.

  18. Tyler, i totally agree with you on the homework situation. I remember my cousin staying up til 2AM 5 days straight because she had so many projects/hw/studying to do for the next day, and by the time the weekend came, she just slept in like a bear during hibernation.
I also agree with you on the sport thing. I'm really excited for the guy's tennis team to come next semester. I really want to work hard to get on Varsity.

  19. The textbooks are not fun. Dragging them class to class is hard enough, but bringing them home is even worse. I tried to use an online textbook made/posted by my Biology teacher. It did not work out. The book was completely different from the school textbook, and caused major problems for me as I struggled to do my homework. As it turns out, I was unable to correctly do the homework because of the online textbook. I suspect some of the other online textbooks are more accurate, but I don't want to take that chance again. Who would?

  20. Corrina, i agree with you on our freedom during school hours. Dress code.. you don't hear teachers yelling at students anymore to go to the office to get another pair of clothes that covers up their "violation"(ESMS). All of the knowledge obtained from now until senior year will be with us all throughout our lives to support our lives and careers. Lockers are a really big help; you don't see kids knocking people down with their 15lb. backpacks anymore (thank god).
PS.. I think we like knew that error.. who said Ms.Gerber was a PERFECT english HONORS TEACHER who has the best grammer?! Would.. What.. SAME THING. :P

  21. Hey, Rachel here...
Highschool for me so far as been a great experience. I have a lot of new friends from band which is great! I was so nervous about getting lost or leaving my books somewhere, but once I got the hang of things, it was easy! Although, going from the top of th school in 8th grade, to the bottom is a big change. I feel so small compared to all the upper classmen. Another change is that the rules are a lot different such as the cell phone usage. I reall enjoy that priviledge. I can't wait for what Highschool will throw at me next because I feel prepared!

  22. Rachel:
I agree with Corrina, I dislike how crowded the hall ways get. I also dislike how the lockers are arranged because I always have to wait for the people opening their lockers under mine to finish. I also agree with Tyler, I am nervous about years ahead of me because it's only the fourth day of school and I already have tests, essays, and homework etc. If this is the easiest year, how will it be in more difficult years to come? AHH!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Don't worry Rachel, if you are constant with your homework and studies, you should easily keep up. Remember, some of our teacher are actually nice, and give us a few breaks. Just remember to prioritize your time, and everything will go well. That is unless, you have a really strict teacher. Then just try to get by.

  24. Daniel, Hahaa yes, I know. I just felt like stating the obvious. She may not be perfect, but she is awesome and a great teacher anyways :D

  25. Oh you Corrina. You're a clever one. You caught my spelling sin. Would you buy that I meant to do that so you can catch it? Nah? I wouldn't either. How bout I'm just not that bright!

  26. So far my high school experiance has been a little rocky. All the masive hallways and intimidating classrooms. Having a locker is a lot more complecated as well as a smaller reminder binder and more homework. At the moment i feel a litte overwellmed but i'm sure I'll get the hang of it soon. In high school I hope to improve my knowledge but most importantly manage my time so i have an even balance of work and play.

  27. Beautiful comments here; articulate and reflective. I see some of you perfectionists have nailed me on the spelling and discovered my dark secret: an English teacher who can't spell. I love the support you guys show each other. It's just super cool for me to ease drop on you and not be disappointed. Way to go peeps.

  28. Alfred, I am excited to do community service too. It's a lot of fun to do stuff with friends, but it's even more fun when your doing something to help the community. Although with our new, busier schedules it will be tricker to find time. Sorry about your locker.

  29. Wesley, I absolutely agree about having to carry the textbooks from school home. I have Mr. Lund and basicly everyday I need to drag my biology book home for some reason or another. I am foreshadowing a repetitive cycle that will get old really quickly. It seems like there should be some sort of online textbook though.

  30. My first few days of highschool have been a little overwhelming. I enjoy most of my teachers and find the lessons interesting, but its all so much to take in. I'm stilll getting used to the lockers, pe uniforms, buildings, and more. I still refer to it as the high school, instead of my school. I cant wait to become more involved in activities like key club and comedy sports.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Westly, I couldnt agree more about the textbooks. I liked in Middle School where we had two sets of books, but my guess is that the high school didnt have enough money for two sets. I have to walk to school and home everyday and its very tiering to carry them around. But I do love lockers and having a place to put my stuff.

  32. I can totally relate to Corrina's comment about not having too much homework now, but knowing that we will in the near future. I've heard stories of how much hw people have every night, yet their social life increases one hundred percent! The preesure of knowing that now the word actually counts for something is a lot to deal with. But, on the bright side, I understand all my homework right now and havnt had to call any of my friends for help!...yet

  33. School has gone pretty smooth so far. It actally went a lot better than I expected. Now I have to walk a lot faster in the hallways though, or people will start to get mad. What I don't like though is constantly having to go to my locker. Especially when they get stuck! UGH. And I also don't like having to carry a bunch of books home; since I live across town and have to walk, my arms ache by the time I get home. What I do like is the energy at the high school. Something about it just makes it so much better than middle school, but I can't exactly put my finger on it.

  34. Amy: I totally agree about having more freedom. That's what I love about high school. I also like the open toed shoes because it gives your feet some air!

    ReplyDelete
  35. Alfred: I love how you said when you face challenges, you take them positively. I feel the same about my language teacher, except I take french. She talks way too fast sometimes and it's hard to understand what she's saying.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well, so far i loved it so far. It's awesome but, if i may say and i will i hate to carry the textbooks and go to your locker for each book, but other than that everything else is pretty cool especially the new people you meet. I also love the challenges that are yet to come to us!!!

    ReplyDelete
  37. My first four days of high school have not shown me much quite yet. It is difficult to adjust to such an unusual environment. This is not what I am used to in any way. Teachers do not hold your hands along the way which is something I have to adapt to. I plan to focus on my work all throughout my four years of high school. The one thing I could do without, which I know will eventually come upon me is the drama. So far I have not been involved in any and I wish it would stay that way. My plan is to take my negative surroundings and somehow make them all positive. Working in a positive enviornment will enrich all of my surroundings.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Tyler: I tottaly agree with you with the whole grades thing because I know that highschool is more challenging than middle school and it gets tougher ,but just remember when the "tough gets going the going gets tough."

    ReplyDelete
  39. Sam : Well, since you don't like half of your classes it may not be the easiest for you. The best advice I can give is try and find new friends in your classes. Especially knowing the fact that you are new this is your chance for a new start! I can relate to you about not liking Biology at all, but I do not think that unless you want to be a biologist when you are older, that that subject will intrest anyone at anytime soon!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Dulce : You can always think of your locker in a positive way. Don't think of it as something you put your books in, make it your own personal style. That is my suggestion. For example, I put Goldfish and my Clifford Juice in my locker ! Yes I know, I sound like I am three, and I am not goign to lie, I pretty much am. Make your locker describe you. Make it cute!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Micah: I can totally relate because it can get a little overwhelming and by a little I mean a lot overwhelming. I'm still not used to everything at this school ethier, but I know I'll get used to it too.
